SUMMARY:The first Artist Residency on AI in RICAIP
DESCRIPTION:After a month-long stay at the residence for the study of artificial intelligence at the Goethe-Institut in Prague\, during which they got acquainted with the activities of the Research and Innovation Centre on Advanced Industrial Production (RICAIP) at the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague\, the French-Korean artist duo\, Douna Lim and her colleague\, returned back to Paris on September 30. We offer a look back at their month spent in the Czech Republic. \n\n\n\nOriginal Article (in German) \n\n\n\nThe interest of this artist duo in new technologies is not new. Already in 2019\, Douna Lim and her colleague had experimented with computer technologies in the experimental fiction short film Mario 101 about the death of Mario Tchou\, a Chinese-Italian engineer who died in a car accident in the 1960s. For the script of this film\, these artists used Google’s language processing program\, the Cloud Natural Language API based on machine learning. \n\n\n\nWhen asked about their interest in new technologies for their next artistic project\, the artist duo answered that they are not only interested in the mere use of technologies\, but rather in reflecting on their use in our everyday lives\, and how technologies change our lifestyles. In their work\, they want to reflect on how technologies affect the cultural\, economic\, and political context of the world we live in. \n\n\n\n© Petra Hajská\n\n\n\nExchange of Experience in the RICAIP Centre\n\n\n\nOne of the challenges associated with the invitation to exchange experiences with researchers in the field of artificial intelligence is communication. How can a language consisting of highly technical\, mathematical\, and algorithmic concepts be translated into a language that can be understood by people without IT training? \n\n\n\nFor Douna Lim and her colleague – who mostly create audio-visual works – this common language has been that of images\, and the language of visual perception of machines\, some of which are partly coordinated by artificial intelligence. One of the questions that the artists asked\, which helped to establish the link between their art and mathematical and algorithmic research\, was about the changes that artificial intelligence could bring to cultural industries\, such as the film industry. Both still recall discussions about how the deep learning process enables programmes to “learn” to recognise objects\, associate them with concepts\, and understand tasks and actions. The challenge for researchers is to enable the machines to reproduce these tasks and actions\, but also to develop a “common sense”. \n\n\n\nIt was interesting for both artists to understand the extent to which new technologies are changing civil society and the cultural world. Indeed\, new technologies such as AI have a direct influence on the means of production\, but also on the framework of cultural production: more and more cultural workers produce and disseminate their works in an automated way. This leads to the standardisation of cultural production and according to Douna Lim and her colleague\, to a certain extent to its impoverishment. For them\, the multiplication of the cultural supply goes hand in hand with less diversification of form and content. \n\n\n\n\n“When it is consumer habits that determine the future cultural ‘market’ and a product is designed on the basis of data analysis to increase efficiency\, we believe there is a fundamental problem because this system reinforces prevailing ideas and prevailing lifestyles.” – Douna Lim \n\n\n\n\nConclusion\n\n\n\nA few weeks after the end of their residency\, the two artists stated that they were glad to be the Goethe-Institut fellows and guests at the RICAIP Centre and to have the opportunity to discover an area that is usually difficult for artists and non-researchers to access. They’ve been able to carry out this internship in the Czech Republic at the Czech Institute of Informatics\, Robotics and Cybernetics\, CTU in Prague (CIIRC CTU). For the artistic duo\, it was particularly interesting to be introduced to the field of industrial AI research in a former communist country\, as it enabled them to analyse the political and historical context of the Czech Republic and observe its impact on scientific research. \n\n\n\nFor Douna Lim and her colleague\, however\, the gathering of experience and artistic contribution does not end with the exchange of views at CIIRC CTU and RICAIP. Both artists were happy to have discovered the City of Prague and Czech culture for themselves. This allowed them to open up to a new influence on their art. \n\n\n\nFuture Artist Guest of the Residence for the Study of Artificial Intelligence\n\n\n\nOn October 21\, London-based artist Lily McCraith arrived at Goethe-Institut in Prague to explore the world of AI research at RICAIP and CIIRC CTU as well. The young artist has a computer science background and uses many media in her artistic creations – such as augmented reality (AR)\, 3D modelling\, 3D printing\, electronics and even artificial neural networks and machine learning. Her approach will be different from that of the first edition\, as Lily McCraith would like to use her stay in Prague to think about how artificial intelligence could solve ecological problems. \n\n\n\nAuthor \n\n\n\nMylène Garin \n\n\n\nCopyright: Goethe-Institut Česká republika \n\n\n\nShare on Facebook\n\nShare on Twitter\n\nShare on LinkedIn

SUMMARY:Goethe-Institut: Artist Residency on AI in RICAIP - Valerie Wolf Gang at DFKI
DESCRIPTION:Valerie Wolf Gang (b. 1991) studied media arts and practices and contemporary art practices at the University of Nova Gorica in Slovenia. She is currently working on her PhD at the Slovenian Academy of Science and Arts. In addition to her artistic practice\, she leads workshops and teaches at various universities. \n\n\n\nValerie Wolf Gang frequently works in time-based and interactive media. She sees technology and new technical developments as a means to increase her artistic scope and creativity. She of course also examines technological developments critically\, but beyond this she is also on the lookout for solutions or improvements\, for instance for approaches to a more positive relationship between people and machines. In her work FLUID\, for instance\, she asks: Can machines help us live healthier lives? \n\n\n\nDuring her residency at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Saarbrücken\, Valerie Wolf Gang will continue her quest in dialogue with the researchers there: Can AI carry out an independent form of creativity? How can we use or develop technology like AI outside of market interests to express ourselves creatively or improve our social coexistence?

Unlike rigidly programmed systems\, they can adapt their behavior to current conditions and change their route if obstacles block the way. If they get into situations for which they cannot find a solution themselves and need outside help\, they initiate a transfer of control (ToC). The technology is being addressed in the TRACTAT project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and its successor CAMELOT\, and is finding influence in the German-Czech EU project RICAIP\, where it is being extended to include aspects of distributed production. In the live broadcast\, RICAIP director Dr. Tilman Becker and DFKI scientist Dr. Tim Schwartz will present the concepts and ideas developed using two practical demonstrators. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFind the link to livestream itself HERE.\n\n\n\nVisit the whole DFKI appearance at Hannover Fair HERE. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo see the livestream\, you have to become a registrated visitor\, which is for free. \n\n\n\nFind the link for a direct registration HERE.

SUMMARY:Robots-In-Residence: NAO robots at the Goethe-Institut are programmed by female-scientists from CIIRC CTU
DESCRIPTION:A team of female-programmers from the Czech Institute of Informatics\, Robotics and Cybernetics  in Prague is participating in the Robots in Residence programme of the Goethe-Institut together with the newly established RICAIP Centre (Research and Innovation Centre on Advanced Industrial Production). Their task is to program the traveling humanoid robot NAO\, which started its journey around Europe a few months ago. At the Goethe-Institut Czech Republic\, the general public can meet the robot during September and get a chance to have an interview with it\, listen to its EU personalities’ quotes\, play a quiz or practice Tai Chi. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNAO arrived in Prague from Ljubljana\, Slovenia\, and after Prague will continue to its next stop in Warsaw. In each country\, local creative programmers provide new skills to the NAO robot. \n\n\n\n„We were happy to join the project mainly as we have got the opportunity to test the development of communication in natural language on a humanoid robot which is in some way new for us. For research purposes\, we have been using Pepper robot for a few past years. We can say that Pepper is an older brother of NAO robot which is being produced by the same company\,“  says Gabriela Šejnová from the Robotic Perception Laboratory at CIIRC CTU and adds: „As part of the HUMR project\, we teach Pepper to talk to seniors from the Active Age Center 90 and practise its cognitive skills using various quizzes and games.“ Kateřina Kubecová\, who is now programming the NAO robot for the Goethe-Institut\, confirms: „We will translate a small example of the communication that Pepper already knows into English and German and equip the NAO robot with it.“ \n\n\n\nThe first meeting with the robot and its Czech programmers took place on Wednesday 9 September 2020 as part of a cultural evening in the framework of the project „Tell me about Europe“\, which is conceived\, among other things\, as a meeting with the writer Alena Wagnerová. The project itself\, alongside a number of other projects\, is presented by the Goethe-Institut and the German Federal Foreign Office during the German EU Council Presidency from July until December 2020. \n\n\n\nMore information here: www.goethe.de/cesko/evropa . \n\n\n\nThe Robots-In-Residence programme in the Czech Republic is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with RoboticLab at the Technical University of Wildau and the Research and Innovation Centre on Advanced Industrial Production (RICAIP) at CIIRC CTU. \n\n\n\nThe programme is part of the large-scale project Generation A = Algorithm also organized by the Goethe-Institut at the occasion of the German Presidency of the EU 2020 Council: Goethe.de/generationa. The project combines different formats\, in addition to the traveling robot\, also online Couch Lessons\, a Climate Challenge Hackathon as well as a residency programme\, in which the Goethe-Institut invites young artists to stay at various research institutes dealing with artificial intelligence to gain new perspectives on the latest technological developments. The AI-Residence programme is aimed at artists aged 18-30\, the so-called Generations Y and Z. RICAIP and CIIRC CTU have been also involved in this activity – it will be implemented only in 2021\, but the collection of applications is already underway. Artists will be selected in the fall of this year and can still apply until 30 September 2020 here. The aim is to stimulate public debate on existing approaches\, potentials and risks of artificial intelligence in the coming „Generation A“\, which is expected to use algorithms in everyday life.
