Research assistant

Research focus: Fault diagnostics, Parameter estimation

Lukáš is a research assistant at the Cybernetics and Robotics group at CEITEC BUT, where he is currently working toward his Ph.D. degree. In 2022, he received BUT Rector’s Award for scientific contribution of his diploma thesis. During his master’s study at Brno University of Technology, he derived a novel mathematical description of PMSM under the inter-turn short circuit fault, which considers universal serial-parallel stator winding architecture. He formed a discrete-time equivalent of this model and designed a model-based diagnostic algorithm that identifies the number of shorted turns in real-time. The improvement lies in utilization of linear time-varying systems parametric estimation approaches. Furthermore, the algorithm was validated on the drive system of SPMSM in the laboratory. In the RICAIP project, he would like to extend his previous work to reliably identify the number of shorted turns, the stator phase that contains the fault, and the value of the fault current flowing through the short circuit. Furthermore, he would like to deal with the model-based diagnostics of other winding faults, such as the phase-to-phase short circuit. He would also like to develop a fault compensation algorithm that utilizes the estimated fault current to provide voltage action correction.

What do you consider the most important achievement in your professional career so far?

One of my most notable professional career achievements is having my contribution accepted for publication in the Q1 journal IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. Secondly, my success in the Brno Ph.D. Talent 2022 competition, where I was awarded a scholarship for my project proposal. Both the Q1 article and project proposal were related to fault diagnostics in electrical drives.

Would you have any piece of good advice for students?

Make sure not to hastily accept the first offer that comes your way, whether it’s for a final thesis or a professional career. Take the time to evaluate your options and choose an area that genuinely excites you and aligns with your interests and goals. Stay motivated and dedicated, and embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, knowing that each failure brings you closer to eventual success.
